Blog #16: What Triggers Your Serotonin?
By: Brianna Torres
Serotonin is a chemical in your body that sends signals from nerve to nerve. Serotonin can impact every part of your body, but today we’re going to focus on what this neurotransmitter can do to your overall mood. Serotonin is a natural mood stabilizer that regulates our happiness and feelings of well being. Having normal levels of serotonin makes you happier, calmer, and more focused. Having low levels of serotonin can lead to depression and anxiety. Too much serotonin can result in serotonin syndrome and cause diarrhea+vomiting, sweating, muscle stiffness, etc.
For me personally, I feel my serotonin being released the most when I’m in nature. A great view really does it for me. I can feel the instant mood shift to the point where I can’t stop myself from smiling. I regularly try to find a new place outside to visit to increase my serotonin.
Here are some of the places I’ve been to recently(all in NJ).
So now I ask you, what releases your serotonin? Is it a place? Activity? Maybe even a person?
Such a great topic, Brianna. Very interesting and informative. I'll add to the list...anything involving the beach, theme parks, good food, outdoor parties, summers at the shore, gardening, the feeling after a thunderstorm. There's definitely something about being outside. It's a natural serotonin trigger.
ReplyDeleteThis is actually pretty interesting, for me when it comes to triggering my serotonin I feel like animals naturally trigger it, spending time with friends, and/or playing games with friends. Something about spending time with other people or with animals triggers it for me.

This was really interesting topic, I didn't even know there was such thing as having to much serotonin. For me personally working out really triggers serotonin, I notice my mood instantly become better on the days I work out versus the days I don't. Also being with my cousins like the vibe and just laughing altogether really triggers my serotonin.
ReplyDeleteWhat releases my serotonin is when I'm spending time with a group of close friends and enjoying a good meal. Sometimes when I finish an assignment before the due date it triggers my serotonin because I feel relieved knowing that I don't have to finish anything. Especially when it is the last assignment of the semester. The feeling is calming and helps me relax.
