Blog #9: Streaming Services vs. Movie Theaters
Since the creation of streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+, new upcoming movies are also starting to appear on the services as well to watch in the comfort of your own home. Especially in the past year.
With the increased popularity of streaming services, I begin to wonder, what will happen to movie theaters in the future. As millions and millions of people across the world are using streaming services, will theaters become a thing of the past and die off just like Blockbuster did?
Personally, the movie theater experience is something that I think streaming services can’t replace. The convenience of streaming movies and TV shows whenever and wherever you want is definitely a milestone I will not ignore however and will definitely give props to.
Do you think movie theaters will still exist for a good while? Does anyone prefer streaming movies over going to the theaters?
Such a great post, Franco. I tend to agree with you. The popularity of streaming services cannot be denied. Still, there's that special *movie magic* that cannot be replicate at home. Something about the "experience," as you say, is so exciting and irreplaceable. The setting of a movie theater stimulates the senses and also gives a good reason to 'get out of the house.' Pandemic or not, that urge isn't going away.
ReplyDeleteMy only complaint? Movie theater prices. That's been a big one for years. Then again, with every network and provider pushing their own streaming service, the cost for access is growing as well.
Another thing. Your mention of Blockbuster reminded me of that doc on Netflix this past week. It was such a fun era to live through -- and certainly makes us nostalgic today. But nostalgia isn't enough to bring back Blockbuster...
I don't think that movie theaters will be replaced with streaming services like Disney Plus or Netflix because movie theaters are a good place to have your dates in, hang out with friends and enjoy your movies with other people. I usually like going to movie theaters and prefer them over Netflix because I can get dressed up with my friends or family members then later we can all catch some dinner when leaving the theater. Most of my high school memories include going to the theater so it is something I would like to continue to experience.

I think with the pandemic and having streaming services right from the comfort of your home has shown us that we can live without theaters. I think theaters might just stop existing, because the main thing about a theater is the experience and after the pandemic I do not think we are going to be having the same experience. I personally do prefer theater though.
ReplyDeleteI think movie theaters will stay around because many people still prefer it for nights out with friends etc. Streaming services however have become very popular especially during the past year. It is convenient and you can watch movies at the comfort of your home. Some people might not like the idea of paying monthly for a streaming service, but rather just pay for a ticket to watch a specific movie and that's why I believe that movie theaters with stay around.

I haven't been to the movie theaters since maybe freshmen or Sophmore year of high school. Everyone kinda stopped hanging out there around that time period because they just grew out of it I guess. My friends and I have movie nights together with Netflix, Hulu, etc. We buy our own food/snacks, lots of blankets+pillows, and can make as much commentary as we want without feeling like we're disturbing other people. I honestly enjoy that a lot better than going to a movie theater. I can see movie theaters dying out eventually, but not any time soon.

I haven’t been to the movies in a long time. The last movie that I saw in the theatre was probably the most recent transformers movie which was about 2-3 years ago. Mainly because of Covid but also because watching movies online (illegally…shh) also I just think going to the movie theatre is so expensive. With the cost of the ticket which can range from $12-$20 and then the popcorn and drinks can which can be another $20. If you watch at home get the snacks that your mom bought you and use the $9 streaming service that you ask your dad to keep and you have all of your money. Theaters may last for a while, movies that have amazing visuals like Star Wars, its worth it to see because you won’t get the same sound and seeing every detail so enlarged. I am currently using Hulu to watch CSI: Miami but I also have Disney+, Netflix, and Peacock. I usually rotate through the services and I am never watching more than one thing. Also you can watch movies on any platform if you look hard enough and sometime they can be free. I think movie theaters will last longer than people will think.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy going to the movie theaters before covid hit and I believe that movie theater will last for a few. Streaming services are great and gotten very popular over the months. I don’t mind going to the movies on a Friday night instead of staying inside. But with covid occurring and other stuff, I don’t think most people are going go back to the movies in a while

I think while movie theaters may decrease in popularity and size, the demand for a place to watch a movie opening night as a social event will always be there. Im think the large chains may go under but a lot of the smaller theaters will do fine.

Great post! I don't think movie theaters will ever go out of business but I believe that streaming services have grown to be more popular because of quarantine and the convenience. I do prefer streaming services (my favs: Netflix and Hulu) but the movies is always a great option to hang out with friends or family.

I don't think movie theaters will ever go out of business because at least for me, there's something about going to a movie theater with friends and watching a movie with the nice audio, chairs, and giant screen.Streaming services are definitely move convenient but they are missing the flair of a movie theater and definitely cost more money over time than going to a movie theater.

i think for an event like infinity war then movie theaters will be packed trust me we want to experience that with people we don't want to experience that by yourselves I mean we can but it won't be that enjoyable. The thing about streaming services is that the thing is that you can talk during the movie you can have your phone on during the movie, and it's still quite enjoyable.

Personally I prefer to watch movies from streaming services, especially now that I am older. When I was younger I used to love going to movie theaters with my friends and family. There are definitely some occasions where it would be fun to go into movie theaters, however I would really just prefer to stay in my bed and watch movies from my room. Since the pandemic, the popularity of movie theaters has definitely decreased, but I don't think that they will ever completely go out of business.
