Blog #7: Pictures in Space?

By: Berkay Bektas

This photo may look like some astronaut took a photo of this nebula from outer space or by some satellite that was flying by, but this photo was actually taken from earth. Miguel Claro a Portuguese astro photographer takes all his photos from the ground. These photos take a long time to set up and Miguel has to go through great lengths to be able to get a shot like even waiting five hours for the exposure for one photo. But in the end the results are worth it to be able to see these beautiful pictures that we usually wouldn't be able to see.

As you can imagine Miguel's work is often featured in NASA, and regularly wins picture of the day.

I think being an astro photographer would be an interesting job. I've always been interested in space and always wondered what's out there, it's fascinating to actually be able to see what's in space.

If you had the chance to go outer space would you, why?

  1. Very intriguing, Berkay! 'Space people' are a unique bunch. This field is so endlessly interesting, complex, and profound. I think the vastness of space and the 'unknowable' aspects of the universe are downright scary. Definitely NOT for me. You will not find me in line to jump on a rocket any time soon. This earth is hard enough to navigate :)

But in all seriousness, this man's work is impressive and inspiring. Very nice share.

  2. If there was an incentive I would go to outer space. Though the idea is terrifying, it is very interesting to explore other aspects of the universe and if I was paid to go and explore I would accept the offer.

  3. If I had the chance to go to outer space, I don't think I would go. Even though outer space is beautiful and is filled with planets as well as stars, I like where I am now. Outer space is way too quiet and a bit scary for one person to explore.

  4. If I had the chance to go to outer space, I would take the trip. There might be some issues I have to go through and maybe some regret but I think it be worth it. I genuinely want to explore other planets and see what on them. Plus, there could be a chance I discovered something that no scientists or person from NASA never knew existed.

  5. As intriguing outer space is, I probably wouldn't take the chance because of the many risks there are to take. For example, being unable to return home for example is definitely a big one I'm not willing to take. Although, it is indeed a very satisfying accomplishment for those willing to take the chance.

  6. I think I would, especially with the modern advancements we have made. I think the risk is very low for sending people up today. I would not want to go onto another plant but going to the ISS would be a really cool trip.

  7. If I had the chance to go to outer space I would be skeptical. I love that we are able to learn more about outer space with technology advancing at such a fast rate, I am also very impressed with people who spend long periods of time out there for a living. Outer space is a beautiful mystery and we still have a lot to learn. The only reason I might not go is because I have I weak stomach!

  8. Based on how things are going on here on Earth, it depends. If it was for survival I would want to think that I would want to escape the impending doom and head for outer space. Then if the opportunity came around there is a chance that I would not take it out of fear. It is scary but who knows where the future may lead where you can go on vacation to outer space.

  9. Being an astro photographer sounds like such an amazing career. I would love to be paid to take such beautiful pictures of space, but only from earth. I would honestly be to terrified to ever go to outer space. The only way I would go was if there was a zombie apocalypse and the zombies were taking over, basically if I had no choice. Outer space does looking amazing but something are better just to look at from far!

  10. Really interesting read, it's fascinating how all those pictures were taken on earth. I think being an astro photographer sounds like a cool career. If I had the decision to go to space, I probably wouldn't. I know I would get really homesick and start to hate being there. Also I don' think I have the stomach go up into space or experience gravity. However traveling to space sounds really cool.

  11. Being an astro photographer sounds like a career where the fruits of your labor are shown in the beautiful photos you are able to take. Although, as you mention Miguel needed to wait five hours to be able to take one photo, the ability to capture something that wouldn't normally be seen on a daily basis makes it all work while. I think if I had the chance to go up into space I would definitely take it, space is such a fascinating topic and being able to see it with your own eyes really puts into perspective how expansive space really is.

  12. It must be amazing knowing that your work is used by the mass public around the world. not just your home country or just the town for like the World being taught in schools. I think I would be too scared to go to space. I'm going to have to take a hard pass.

  13. If I had the chance to go to outer space, I feel like I probably would. I have always been very intrigued by space, even though it is a little scary. I would probably be hesitant jus because there have been many space related accidents, but overall I think that it would be so cool to actually go into space.
