Post #3: What do you think of climate change?

By: Aiyah Abdallah

The weather outside lately has been quite crazy for anyone that’s aware. It’s been a snow day after a snow day. While snow days are fun, depending on how you spend it, there just shouldn’t be such monstrous snowstorms during this time of year. I believe this is due to climate change and global warming. We as humans are not taking this as seriously as we should and now we are facing the consequences of our actions.

Climate change is very real and has been affecting the earth tremendously. Yet the majority of humans do not take it seriously because not every individual has experienced the life-threatening effects of climate change but what we fail to realize is that it will soon affect us all. We currently see such effects in Texas. It’s a state that never gets snow and was never prepared for such circumstances. The snowstorms Texas has faced have left people with no water and electricity. The two things that are very important on a day-to-day basis. Having no power during such cold times has caused harm to people especially families with young children.

If we don’t take action soon our planet will reach a point of no return! This is where we must stop and ask ourselves “What can we do as students in college to help our earth and end climate change?” We are the future and we need to start thinking about the future!

  1. No doubt, Aiyah, the worst thing we can do (as a planet) is ignore reality. Call me naive, but I put great trust in the environmental experts and world scientists who educate us on climate change and make suggestions to mitigate the destruction of our planet. The problem is, many countries simply do not have the resources, knowhow, or motivation to do the 'right thing.' I feel that America is lightyears ahead of most nations--and no, we are not perfect. But I look at my own community of peers, and the vast majority of us feel as you do. We do our small part, even if that means not contributing to the problem. Still, that's not enough. We will have to be even more proactive as time goes on.

For sure, this current generation should amp up efforts to preserve our planet, as should future generations. As technology and awareness grows, I think we will make even greater progress.

  2. I didn't realize how bad climate change and global warming was getting until I saw videos of people from Texas struggling to stay warm. Texas is a prime example of how fast everything can go wrong and how we need to take action now. Texas seems to have been an eye-opener for some and makes these new conditions harder to look into the future because of how fast climate change is moving. But with our new government, I can only hope that we are able to stop and end global warming. In the beginning, I honestly didn't know what I could do as a college student to help end climate change. But after some research, I was able to see that I can help by advocating more about climate change, donating to organizations who are trying to help, try talking to more people about the situation, and use my social media to help others become aware.

  3. With the levels of pollution we are putting out on a daily basis and the refusal of large companies or countries to change their carbon footprint I do no believe climate change can be fixed. Most pollution comes from factories or other large scale operations and not from the everyday person. The only way to stop or even reduce climate change is to completely stop countries like china from making hundred of coal plants a year.

  4. After the recent snow storm that happened in Texas, climate change has gotten worse and more people are starting to realize this. Beforehand, most people didn't believe this or thought it was some fake hoax. If we don't anything to stop it or make change, it will become worse over the few years. We can help give back to the communities in Texas that lost power by giving out donations. For climate change, I think as college students, we can kind-of inform the younger generation and tell them what the bad about climate change and how they can fix it as they grow up

  5. I strongly agree with every point you've made. Our planet is hurting and we need to take action. Like you said, we are the future. We need to start thinking about the type of environment we'll be living in 10 years from now, the type of environment our future kids will be brought into. It won't be easy, but I have faith in the current college students who are studying earth and environmental sciences.

  6. I agree that climate change is a very powerful and dangerous thing to our planet's wellbeing that we should be more cautious about. I also agree with the fact that most of us won't really care about it as long as it doesn't affect us personally but others are and we should be more considerate of the damages others have suffered due to climate change like in the recent snowstorms in Texas.

  7. Sad truth is our earth is changing. There have been scientific studies and research that proves if humans were to go extinct it would only take the earth about 100-200 years to heal itself. That just amazes me how we as a species destroy the very planet that gave us life. I believe we as as population are working harder and passing laws to to help preserve the earth but we are no where near good enough yet.

  8. I don't think people are ready to except that our world might be in crisis because if they do accept it then that means there is a potential for worldwide panic. Panic is always a better solution than losing their lives due to climate change. Climate change is real and a serious issue needs to be addressed like a serious issue. Or people are going to lose their lives.

  9. Unfortunately, everything you said is completely right. Our planet is slowing decaying and it is intact our fault. But the problem is not everyone even thinks climate change is real and it has even become a political issue. There is still time to fix the damage we made, but researchers have discovered that between 2027-2042 the damage will be irreversible. But there is still time!! There are many things we can do as college student everyday to lessen our carbon footprint. It can be as simple as reducing you water waste or driving a more fuel efficient car! But to me the most important thing we can do is come together and speak up. We all need to work together to make the change or else nothing will be done.

  10. I agree with everything you said. If our planet is dying we need to take action and attempt to heal it or revive it. If we're the future we need to make sure that there will be a planet here for our children and families to live on. We can switch from gas power to all electric, for example, switching from a gas stove to an electric stove to lessen the use of fossil fuels. We can use solar panels to generate electricity and even switch to electric cars to lessen carbon emission. If we can get the majority of people to do at least some of these suggestions we can at least allow our planet to live longer.

  11. Though climate change has been slowly affecting our planet for years now, it has only come to more people's attention in the more recent years. I feel like younger people are more in touch with climate change since it wont affect older people as much as our generation. Our planet is beginning to see the affects of climate change, therefore, we need to take more action to help save future generations from facing the more serious consequences. In a couple years from now, the damage done to our planet because of climate change will be permanent, so it's really important for us to make real changes in our everyday lives soon, and shine a light on this topic to make others realize that we need to act now.
